This piece explores the quiet violence and destructive nature of internalized anger. The music begins as a restrained musical “migraine” and builds into a overwhelming, nuclear explosion of rage. Caged Rage is a musical imagination what lives between the spaces of what is felt, and what is allowed to be felt. Quietly, slowly, and politely, pressure is built to instability, and eruption is imminent. We have to ask ourselves: Is this human nature or is this primal instinct?
This piece allows for your lead tenor saxophonist and guitarist to soar over the solo section in an argumentative internal dialogue. This section is intentionally buildable and gradually gains weight, instability, and force, making way for your lead trumpet to explosively “scream”. Our last build includes the ensemble in a hyperventilating 2 over 3 rhythmic section, and finishing in with our saxophonists demanding our emotional composure.
The cost of composure is measured by what we neglect within.
